Inspiration
In video games today, crossplay (that is, video games with servers shared between different platofrms) are becoming more and more common. However, the means of communication between these platforms is virtually non-existent. Moreover, almost all conventional audio chats are useless for the hard-of-hearing. We aim to remedy both.
What it does
Simply put, H4RMNY is a cross-platform audio and text chat, that enables users of any platform (PC, console, mobile, VR/AR) to communicate with each other in a newly-simplistic way. For example, currently, if a PC user wants to join an audio chat with a user on Playstation, either one of them requires some kind of external hardware to accomplish that. With H4RMNY, all it takes is a download on your pre=existing hardware. Moreover, we have implemented a speech to text option, so those who are hard-of-hearing can still participate in teamplay.
How we built it
We used the Figma prototyping software to create a user interface and implement some of the features.
Challenges we ran into
The primary challenge our team ran into was learning how to use Figma. In the beginning, small problems would take far longer than they should've to be rectified. Now, however, we are able to efficiently eradicate any bugs or issues with our prototype.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of our implementation of speech to text. It was very important to us to be able to include a group that is typically forgotten about in gaming (especially console and mobile): the hard of hearing. With our implementation, it is easy for those without the best hearing to still engage and communicate with their teammates who are using voice chat.
What we learned
What we learned was not only how to use Figma, but also how to create a simple, yet effective user interface, and what kind of features are necessary to create a service such as this
What's next for H4RMNY
The next step for H4RMNY is to implement a text to speech option. While this is unfortunately not possible using Figma's prototyping software, we see it as the next step in being able to include those who either may not have the best eyesight or who find it easier for something to be read to them, for whatever reason.
