HELP application that protects users by identifying infection outbreaks and informing users about the possible risk of exposure to the virus. HELP is a system of anonymous sharing user’s location and health status, so that analytical services can locate high concentration sites, more frequently visited places, where people with a high risk of infection or directly infected people were present. HELP is therefore a collection of services to assist in detecting potential outbreaks of viral infections and notifying the population of such risks. All you have to do is share your location and undergo medical diagnostic and survey. We place great emphasis on data anonymisation, it is the users who decides how much of their data will be made available to the requesting mechanisms to enable more accurate mapping of infections and risks. The biggest problem to be solved in the current situation is to master the situation of new infections in the realities of socially relevant services.

From the first application execution - HELP allows the user to carry out a diagnostic survey and to provide the current biomedical parameters concerning health condition: temperature, lung auscultation, cough sound recording, pulse and oxygen saturation in blood (supported by available in smartphones or external medical sensors). Medical questions and measurements are dynamically adjusted to the answers given, giving a comprehensive picture of the current state of the user. Anonymized survey results along with geolocation data are transmitted to server services, which aggregate, analyze and correlate the movement paths, locations of users to determine the areas with the highest risk of CoV-SARS-2 infection. The resulting map layers are sent back to users, presenting the basic areas and popular paths where people attend, areas where marked users with a high risk of CoV-SARS-2 infection or the sick are present. If an infected person is identified or another risk of exposure to the pathogen is detected, all users with registered exposure periods at the monitored location will be notified immediately. In addition to the notification itself, the person will be subject to an epidemiological monitoring procedure - where they will be periodically asked about possible symptoms and temperature measurements. A key aspect is also the possibility to verify the maintenance of quarantine or sanitary surveillance - using geolocation and photo documentation.

The HELP system is a free mobile application integrated with server services of data aggregation. The acquisition of commonly recorded geolocation data, in the context of semantically processed location map, allows us to deduce the potential infection focal points. Having such knowledge about risky locations allows us to pay attention to their sanitization, place additional security procedures, and above all, notify people exposed to the virus.

Summary

HELP system simplifies the identification of COVID-19 infection clusters and automatic notification of citizens if they have been exposed to possible infections risks. Additionally, many people have doubts if they are really experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or any other infections. And if infected during the home quarantine many people are left alone without proper medical surveying and monitoring which can be easily organized utilizing handhelds in an anonymized environment. Health environment for Living in Pandemia is a mobile system with 3 parts – Smarthone APP – Cloud services – and analitical portal. The smartphone app is a secure monitoring hub and medical survey board and notification device. Sharing is caring – that is why if You anonymously share the knowledge about Your health state – we can help You and Your close ones. As a cybersecurity specialists we have secured the application and personal data – and only aggregate certain parts of it on our cloud services. Now how our HELP works? The Mobile application give access to risks heat maps, seamlessly tracks You position and anonymises Your data while sharing this with the central server. Based on diagnostics surveys and symptoms reporting we are able to assess the risk of COVID in that specific local population. If a health threat is detected our algorithms can correlate the spatial data and notify all the people possibly exposed to an ill person. During the isolation and quarantine we also provide guardian angel like services which will automatically ask You about medical data, check Your health and needs. Medical survey questions and measurements are dynamically recorded, giving a comprehensive picture of the current state of the user. HELP is a data miner so we openly share this knowledge. Mobile software is a key – it is a background tracer and notifier – our system will ask You if needed and notify You about possible helth hazards if we find them during analysis. For future work: we need to disseminate mobile application to receive real world data on top of which we will validate the algorithms for medical survey assessment and location-based aggregation and reasoning. These algorithms require calibration and tuning as we implemented only stubs for machine learning mechanisms and used reinforced learning based on simulated data for the diagnostics of COVID-19 and infection geo-clusters identifications. We expect that widely used H.E.L.P. solution will identify geo-locations safe for people, and locations (facilities) requiring sanitization or even exclusion, slowing down the infection spreading and slowly abolishing the epidemiological restrictions but also lunching the economy. The impact of having safe, secure way of … “Doing Your Part” anonymously sharing your health state and geo-location data while receiving – diagnostics or epidemiological threat notifications will change the way the society works. We stay strongly on that that only the volunteering, consciously sharing anonymized data for the common good will help the authorities and medical staff fight with the pandemia, without incorporating the other GSM carrier level tracking. Inspiration

What drives us is a feeling of deep-rooted passion and motivation to deliver solutions that can save people's lives. We serve for people as military IT specialists that is why we have decided that we can apply our experiences and knowledge to solve some crucial problems – tracking and analysis of pandemia using wide spread mobile devices.

As cybersecurity and decision support specialists we have captured an idea how to help us avoid pandemia risks, connected with the movement of citizens. Secure and seamless monitoring of our location, with medical diagnostics can help the authorities to identify clusters of infections.

Recently, we realised that we don't know where infected people might be to keep away from those areas. Many people have doubts have they been infected, and are there any risks in their neighbourhood. That inspired us to create the H.E.L.P. application.

If a risks of infection is detected, the system using spatial reasoning will identify possible people at risk and notify them about such a threat. Accordingly, people who might have contact with infected person will receive, a notification with generated map with risk areas and population density heat map. This way without the user

Web application provides a Health Care Centre with the ability to display a Common Infection Picture on a map and supports the decision making process to stop spreading SARS-CoV-2.

H.E.L.P. system’s major advantage is the analytical capability to fuse, correlate and analyse the location and health data. Our implementation efforts give threat heat maps – demonstrating the locations with high density of visitors, or location and routs which have been exposed to a certain level of infection risks. The users benefit from this data accessing such spatial data on a regular map – thus avoiding such places or visiting hours. HELP is a data miner so we openly share this knowledge.

HELP technology detects cough sounds through the phone’s microphone during the examination process. AI algorithms analyze the sound using machine-learning, a kind of artificial intelligence that can “learn” to recognize patterns, in this case in the sound of an individual person’s cough.

H.E.L.P. system takes care in particular for elderly people by utilizing Voice Guidance system across all functions available.

How we built it

We have been working on analytical tools for decision and command support which strongly relies on algorithmic analysis of location tracking. The team also developed set of mobile biomedical tools for medical diagnostics that is why we are familiar with medical diagnostic procedure based on biopotential, image and sound recognition. The team has been composed of the computer scientists, AI researchers, mobile and web developers and IT officer cadets. This brings a wide variety of expertise and motivation to deliver innovative and unique product solving a crucial problem – tracking pandemic clusters – locations, facilities, people.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge for us was to develop a working solution in a very short time. Our goal was not only to implement functionalities itself but also to make a mobile and web application users-friendly and encouraging to use daily. Another difficulty was to implement a proper cough sound recording mechanism in a way that a doctor or AI algorithms can examine.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We managed to implement cross-platform working solution that provides a group of functionalities that truly address and improve limiting of spreading SARS-CoV-2. An open architecture is ready for extensions with new capabilities related to the pandemia.

What we learned

Whilst working under the time pressure we improved the team cohesion by using new Open Source Collaboration Software Tools. Moreover, development of H.E.L.P. let us understood the process that applies from conditions gathering to a diagnose for a single person.

What's next for COVID-19

Our goal is to add new functionalities to the H.E.L.P. system, in particular in the areas of:

  • utilizing Artificial Intelligence for health conditions analysis,

  • bringing situation awareness to the user regarding a help he can get from the Government and the Health Care System,

  • enhance the web application with the virus-related data coming from OSINT.

PRESS NOTE

NCBC and WAT created an application to fight COVID-19

IT experts from the National Cyber Security Centre and the Military University of Technology created an application called Health Environment for Living in Pandemia (H.E.L.P.), which aims to search for people with coronavirus nearby and stop the virus from spreading by warning mobile users about the danger.

The application was implemented as part of # BuildforCOVID19 Global online Hackathon - an international project organized on the DEVPOST platform and supported by the World Health Organization and scientists from Chan Zuckenberg Biohub. In total, several hundred teams from around the world joined the competition.

H.E.L.P. application is addressed to users of mobile phones working on the Android system. Its task is to increase the safety of people who move in public space. The application is easy to use and intuitive. You just need to join the group of other users sharing your geolocation data to receive a colored map with information about places to avoid. The map is updated on a regular basis. The data is completed in real time. The green color of the place we want to go to means it is safe and red is a warning of a potential threat.
