Inspiration
South Africans generate immense amounts of data daily, yet most people have little understanding or control over how that data is used. Inspired by platforms like Gener8, we wanted to create a solution that ensures data ownership, transparency, and fair rewards for South Africans. The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and the global shift towards ethical data practices motivated us to design a system that aligns with local laws while addressing pressing socio-economic challenges such as unemployment and financial exclusion.
What it does
SecuNetra is a user-first data platform that empowers individuals to see, understand, and control their data in a simple and engaging way. It rewards users with airtime, grocery vouchers, electricity tokens, and other locally relevant benefits when they share their data. At the same time, it provides anonymized and aggregated insights to businesses in a POPIA-compliant way, creating a transparent data economy where users and companies both benefit.
How we built it
Front-end Development: Used Django for a robust web application. Backend Development: Leveraged Python and libraries like TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Scikit-learn. Forecasting models mainly Machine Learning and deep learning .
Challenges we ran into
Time management
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite the challenges, we are proud of what we achieved. We designed a POPIA-first platform that aligns with South African data laws, and we built a functional prototype where users can not only see the value of their data but also redeem rewards. We established a dual benefit model where users earn while businesses access ethical insights, and we developed a clean and engaging user interface that makes complex data understandable for everyone.
What we learned
During this journey, we learned the importance of trust in data platforms and how essential it is for users to have control and clarity over their data. We also learned how to localize global ideas like Gener8 to fit the South African context in a way that feels relevant and valuable. In addition, we gained insights into the technical and legal challenges of building a compliant data marketplace and discovered the potential impact that small but meaningful rewards can have on people when tied to something as valuable as their data.
What's next for SecuNetra
The future of SecuNetra is promising. Our next steps include forming partnerships with telecoms and retailers to integrate directly with real airtime, electricity, and grocery redemption APIs. We plan to expand the platform beyond South Africa to other African markets that share similar data and privacy challenges. On the technical side, we aim to incorporate machine learning to give users smarter and more personalized insights based on their data. Finally, we want to collaborate with South African brands and startups to provide them with ethical, compliant access to consumer insights, further building a trusted ecosystem that benefits everyone.
