Inspiration
Women specific health issues, as a society, has a pre-conceived notion that struggles like severe period pain, menopausal symptoms, contraceptive side effects, and even birth damage are things that women just have to put up with. These deeply embedded attitudes stop women from seeking support in the first place and often stop them either getting effective support or sympathy. Even though we can’t professionally help we created GynoGo in order to help build an open community in which we can support each other and together help bring awareness to the lack of women’s health knowledge in the medical industry.
What it does
It's a matchmaking app that connects women with similar background, age and conditions. There are options within the app that allow the user to easily select what exactly they want from their interactions; whether they have been dealing with their condition for years and want to help others or they just want someone to relate to, the app has it all.
How we built it
In terms of development, we would create the front-end of the application in iOS and Android. We would store all the data in a database such as Dynamo DB and read and write to the database using an API such as RestAPI.
Challenges we ran into
As students with an architecture and structural engineering background, we aren’t too familiar with code, but we used popular matchmaking apps such as tinder, hinge and bumble as guides.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We used Figma to create the app and show the user interface which we had in mind. This is a new skill which we learnt efficiently in a short amount of time ; we are very proud of ourselves for it. Furthermore, this idea targets a problem which many women go through and it helps to tackle the feeling of loneliness during these hard times. The PowerPoint is also very informative and clear.
What we learned
We learnt a lot of statistics about how overlooked women’s health actually is. Even though we knew this was a big social issue, we didn’t know just how bad it actually was! We also learnt a lot about developing apps and user interfaces while using Figma for the first time. Through doing the wackathon, we also improved our communication and teamwork skills immensely. Time management was also a key skill developed as there was only 24 hours to complete and perfect an idea.
What's next for GynoGo
We would incorporate an AI machine learning bot to help with any queries and have it learn symptoms and advice through government approved websites eg NHS website.
