GymLens

Inspiration

Many people want to start going to the gym but feel intimidated or embarrassed because they don't know how to use the equipment. We wanted to create something simple that lowers the barrier to entry and helps beginners feel more confident walking into a gym.

The idea was inspired by a friend who gave up going to the gym because he didn't know how to use the machines and felt out of place.

What it does

GymLens is an app where users can take a picture of any gym equipment, and the app identifies it, explains what it is, and shows how to use it safely. It also provides example workouts and suggests which muscle groups it targets.

How we built it

We used a combination of image recognition and a custom-built equipment database.
The frontend is built using Next.js (React-based) for a fast, mobile-friendly web experience, and the backend is built with Node.js.

Additional Information

Business Model

We have pivoted GymLens to a B2B solution, selling directly to gyms instead of individual users.
GymLens is integrated into a gym’s own app or platform, helping them improve new member retention, reduce onboarding costs, and enhance member satisfaction.

Problem We Solve

  • High Churn: 50%-60% of new gym members quit within the first two months.
  • Expensive Coaching: Gyms often spend around €9,600/month per location on onboarding coaches.
  • Member Intimidation: 50% of beginners feel uncomfortable using gym equipment, leading to cancellations.

How GymLens Helps

  • Instant Equipment Scanning: Identify machines and get guidance instantly.
  • Personalized Workouts: Tailored workout suggestions based on fitness goals.
  • Form and Safety Tips: Prevent injuries and build confidence.
  • Progress Tracking: Keep users motivated.
  • Multi-Language Support: For diverse gym audiences.
  • Easy Integration: White-label or API integration options for gyms.

Value Proposition

  • Increase Retention Rates: Expected improvement to 60%-80%.
  • Reduce Operational Costs: Saving gyms like FitStop and Luxus around €9,000 per month.
  • Higher Member Satisfaction: Members feel guided and supported from day one.

Market and Go-to-Market

  • Pilot Launch: FitStop (Germany) and MyFitness (Latvia) end of May 2025.
  • Initial Market: Latvia and Germany, expanding to USA.
  • Market Size: 51,000 gyms across the USA, Germany, and Latvia.
