Inspiration

Raised in the quintessential Singaporean HDB estate, we are all too familiar with the garang guni man, who tirelessly walks up and down entire blocks of flats just to engage homeowners to sell their recyclables. In this day and age, we feel that a modern solution has been far overdue. As such, we set out to try Guni Guni.

What it does

Guni Guni is a web platform that connects homeowners wishing to recycle their items, with garang gunis. Many homeowners are not around at home when the garang gunis make their rounds because they are working full-time. As such, Guni Guni allows homeowners to schedule pickup slots way in advance to fit their calendars. As for garang gunis, the days of scouring blocks of flats are over. With Guni Guni, garang gunis can view the locations and timeslots of every pickup requets. They can then plan their own route to optimise their schedule and efforts.

How we built it

We built the frontend using reactJS on TypeScript. The backend was built on FireBase.

Challenges we ran into

Remote collaboration proved to be difficult. Google APIs were hard to develop with - API quotas are very limited.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of our design and graphics, with good UX.

What we learned

We learnt how to integrate Google APIs. We learnt how to use FireBase, and ReactJS.

What's next for Guni Guni

We are hoping to link up with relevant key stakeholders to make Guni Guni a reality for a greener Singapore. We hope it can continue to help garang gunis around the country.
