Inspiration Inspired by the increasing prevalence of gum disease and its impact on overall health, we aimed to create a solution that empowers individuals to take proactive measures for their oral health. Understanding that early detection is crucial, we envisioned a system that leverages advanced technology to enhance dental care.
What it Does Gum Sense is a machine learning-driven system that analyzes dental images to detect gingivitis and classify its severity. It provides personalized follow-up care recommendations and features an integrated management webpage for dental professionals, streamlining patient monitoring and improving workflow efficiency.
How We Built It We utilized convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to develop our image analysis model, training it on a diverse dataset of dental images. The system's frontend was built using React, while the backend is powered by a robust machine learning infrastructure. We integrated a user-friendly interface that allows easy image uploads and displays diagnostic results and recommendations.
Challenges We Ran Into Throughout the project, we faced several challenges, including gathering a sufficiently diverse and representative dataset for training our model, ensuring the accuracy of diagnoses, and integrating the management webpage seamlessly into the existing workflows of dental practices. Balancing user experience with technical complexity also posed a challenge.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of We successfully developed a functional prototype of Gum Sense, demonstrating high accuracy in detecting gingivitis and classifying its severity. The positive feedback from initial user testing and validation from dental professionals affirmed the potential impact of our solution. We also created a comprehensive management webpage that enhances patient monitoring.
What We Learned This project taught us the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, as we combined expertise from machine learning, dental health, and software development. We learned about the challenges of deploying AI in healthcare, including data privacy and the necessity for transparency in AI-driven decisions.
What's Next for Gum Sense Moving forward, we plan to enhance Gum Sense by expanding its capabilities to detect other oral diseases, such as periodontitis and cavities. We aim to incorporate user feedback for further refinements and develop partnerships with dental clinics to facilitate real-world implementation. Our goal is to empower patients with knowledge and tools for proactive gum health management.
