About the Project — GuideU
Inspiration
Many students struggle to find proper guidance during their college life. Juniors often feel confused about subjects, internships, projects, and career paths, while seniors and alumni have valuable experience that usually remains unused. GuideU was inspired by the idea of creating a single platform where students can ask doubts, share knowledge, and support each other academically and emotionally. We wanted to build a system that connects juniors, seniors, and alumni in a meaningful way and helps students grow with the right guidance at the right time.
What It Does
GuideU is a student guidance and learning platform that provides: A Q&A system where juniors can ask doubts and seniors/alumni can answer. Resource-based sections for certificates, courses, internships, and projects. Personalized roadmaps based on year, interests, and career goals. AI-based mentor support for quick guidance. Career discovery and skill gap analysis. Internship and opportunity tracking. Daily micro-tasks for consistent learning. Anonymous question feature for sensitive doubts. Mentor–mentee interaction system. Engagement through likes, comments, and reports. It helps students plan their academic journey, improve skills, and stay motivated.
How We Built It
GuideU was built using modern web technologies: Frontend: React.js for building an interactive and user-friendly interface. Backend & Database: Firebase (Cloud Firestore & Authentication) for secure data storage and user management. Hosting: Vercel for deploying the frontend. We implemented authentication, role-based access, real-time data updates, and structured database collections to manage users, questions, answers, and resources efficiently.
Challenges We Ran Into
Some major challenges we faced were: Designing a database structure that supports multiple roles and years. Managing authentication and secure access for different users. Handling real-time updates for questions and answers. Implementing proper validation and security rules. Integrating multiple features without breaking existing functionality. Making the UI simple and attractive for students. We overcame these challenges through continuous testing, debugging, and improving our system design.
Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of
Successfully built a working Q&A and mentorship platform. Implemented role-based access for juniors, seniors, and alumni. Created a structured resource-sharing system. Integrated Firebase Authentication and Firestore securely. Designed a scalable architecture for future features. Developed an engaging and user-friendly interface. We are proud that GuideU can genuinely help students in their academic journey.
What We Learned
Through this project, we learned: How to design and manage cloud-based databases. Real-world use of Firebase Authentication and Firestore. Building scalable React applications. Handling user roles and permissions. Improving UI/UX for better user experience. Team collaboration and project planning. Problem-solving and debugging in complex systems. This project helped us gain practical experience in full-stack development.
What’s Next for GuideU
In the future, we plan to: Improve the AI mentor system with better personalization. Add advanced analytics and insights. Integrate push notifications. Enhance security and performance. Add mobile app support. Expand career and mental health support features. Partner with institutions for wider usage. Our goal is to make GuideU a complete student growth and mentorship platform.
