Inspiration

Controlled breathing and meditation has proven to be very helpful when trying to improve mental health. I wanted to work on something that could help people with anxiety and stress, and what better way than through guided breathing exercises. I drew inspiration from the Pause Necklace by Giovanna Herrera: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pausenecklace/pause-necklace?lang=en

What it does

It displays an on-screen countdown (based on a user-selected breathing technique) and vibrates to alert the user when they need to inhale, hold their breath, and exhale

How we built it

Using Arduino Nano, OLED display, mini vibration motors, and LiPo battery. The device is powered by a LiPo battery. Once turned on, the user is able to select one of three breathing techniques via the use of momentary push buttons. After the desired technique has been selected, the user is able to see an on-screen countdown telling them how long they have to inhale, hold their breath, and exhale for

Challenges we ran into

Getting all the hardware components to work together and sync with the software

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Learning to work with various hardware components in a short period of time

What we learned

I learned about circuitry, how to use mini vibration motors, and that making a physical manifestation of a project can be so much fun!

What's next for Guided Breathing Portable Device

Better display case (perhaps made with 3D printing), on-off switches for vibration motors and screen, incorporate a choice where the user is able to input a custom breathing technique
