Inspiration

We want to help relieve the intense pressure hospital workers feel from the aging population combined with staff shortage. Visually impaired people face everyday challenges such as finding open seats in restaurants, airports, classrooms, gyms and more. With our app 'Guide Dog' it uses text to speech to inform users of their surroundings. This is especially useful for people with visual impairments or even if you simply forgot your glasses or contacts.

What it does

Guide Dog helps visually impaired people be more independent and gain more confidence by using text to speech to help inform the user of their surroundings. People don't want to feel forced to use it so it will simply be a optional supplement that helps prevent injuries and lawsuits. Lawsuits can range from anywhere between $10,000 to $500,000 plus. This will be especially helpful in hospitals since it allows users to rely less on workers who are already under intense pressure from the aging population combined with shortage staff. This app is cheap to scale, doesn't require storage, gives user autonomy and reduces readmissions into the hospitals from injuries.

How we built it

We utilized EyePop.ai's computer vision tools to detect people with the device's camera.

Challenges we ran into

It was a challenge for us to get the right code to detect if users were on the left, right or center.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We stayed patient to figure out the code and utilized AI to create a solution to a problem.

What we learned

We learned how to design a front-end focused web app that utilizes the EyePop.ai api and we learned how to approach pitching an app.

What's next for Guide Dog for Visually Impaired

The app will continue to improve its accuracy and expand to airports and pharmacies.
