Inspiration
Reddit posts are easy to recognize once you know their subreddit. Remove that context, and an image, video, or title becomes a real puzzle. Guesseddit turns that into a social game where the community finds clues and players race to identify where they came from.
It also encourages cross-subreddit pollination: after guessing, players can reveal and explore source communities they may never normally visit.
What it does
Guesseddit is a Reddit-native subreddit guessing game.
- Players create challenges from public Reddit posts and become the round's Scout.
- Guesseddit snapshots the title, media, author, subreddit, score, and comment count at creation, so players always see a fair, unchanging clue.
- Other players choose from four subreddit answers. They get one guess and cannot guess on their own challenge.
- Correct guesses earn Predictor points; the first correct player gets a bonus.
- Scouts earn points as their challenge attracts guesses, especially when players fall for an optional fictional-subreddit trap.
- Player-created rounds stay active and rise with activity. A persistent Hourly Guesseddit post rotates fresh rounds each hour.
- Leaderboards, achievements, streaks, player titles, and optional flair reward returning players.
- Discussion happens in each round's native Reddit comment thread.
How we built it
Guesseddit runs entirely on Reddit's Developer Platform with no external backend, database, analytics, payments, or external HTTP Fetch access.
- Devvit Web: React and Tailwind interactive posts for the main board, Hourly game, individual rounds, and submission portal.
- Hono + Devvit Redis: Stores snapshots, guesses, leaderboards, achievements, streaks, player profiles, and drafts.
- Reddit API: Loads source posts, creates game posts, supports moderation, native comments, and optional flair.
- Devvit Scheduler: Rotates and resolves Hourly rounds.
Each guess has a unique player-and-round record, keeping one-guess enforcement and point awards safe even if server work retries.
Challenges we ran into
- Fairness: Reddit posts can change or disappear, so Guesseddit snapshots clues immediately and removes stored source content when deletion is confirmed.
- Spoilers: The answer is public Reddit metadata, so subreddit names, authors, and source links must remain hidden until the appropriate result view.
- Mobile play: We built compact inline play, expanded views, and a Share → Repost-to-draft fallback for mobile Reddit links Devvit cannot expand directly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A complete Reddit-native game loop: create, guess, score, explore, discuss, return.
- Fair, spoiler-safe snapshots and idempotent scoring.
- Community-driven rounds, fictional decoy traps, Hourly content, leaderboards, achievements, streaks, and player flair.
- Native Reddit comments, moderator removal tools, and self-service player data deletion.
- A game that helps players discover new communities beyond their usual feeds.
What we learned
The best Reddit games use the community itself as both the content and the multiplayer layer. Guesseddit showed us that fairness, discoverability, and social interaction matter as much as the core guessing mechanic.
