Inspiration
My nephew is a hardcore Pokemon fan. When it comes to games, that's what he would always think about. While browsing for ideas in the published app gallery, we couldn't come across any Pokemon-related app. Therefore, this might be a fun app to get enthusiast to challenge their knowledge within the app itself!
What it does
Back in the day, our Pokemon show always got interrupted by the "Who's that Pokemon!". Well, this app does the same thing with the silhouette. This time, with the twist to challenge the leaderboard. All within Reddit itself.
How we built it
The app was built using Webview with capabilities such as Redis and Reddit API. We use the Devvit webview react template to kickstart the development. And, with a lot of help from AI assistance using Amazon Q developer for the nitty gritty detailing.
We started with just building it locally with "Vite". Once the core application is done, we only start porting it into a gameplay that suits the Reddit interactions.
Challenges we ran into
- Dealing with assets. We weren't aware of the CSP rule to begin with. We mainly based on the original assumption that you can embed external link images onto the Webview. This is also mainly due to the sheer amount of assets(images) needed to serve the game play. Upon further reading and investigating, we decided to put those images as part of the
assetsmaking sure that they conform with the publishing requirement. - Hot reloading. The update isn't always consistence. In most cases, app iteration will be much quicker if the changes can reflect much quicker. Nevertheless, as a temporary measure to speed up the development, we built it locally with "Vite", before working on the core parts that depend on the Reddit platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The app feels polished. We even make sure that the app allows decent level to tolerance and error so that it is enjoyable for everyone.
What's next for Guess the Pokemon
- Output the stats to group by the pokemon generation. Oldies like me are much more familiar with the older generation pokemon. Thus, allowing the moderator to choose the specific generation only can target different group of Pokemon lovers and have fun with it.
