AI Email Agent with Secure Token Vault Access

Inspiration

As AI agents become more capable, they are increasingly trusted to perform tasks like reading and sending emails. However, users are often forced to give full access to their personal data, which can be risky and difficult to control.

We were inspired to solve this by building a system where AI does not blindly execute actions, but instead evaluates their safety before acting. Our goal is to ensure automation remains secure, transparent, and always under user control.

What it does

Our project is an AI-powered email assistant that can:

  • Read emails (simulated inbox)
  • Summarize important messages
  • Generate smart replies
  • Send emails on behalf of the user

What makes it unique is its secure access model:

  • Users explicitly grant permission for AI actions
  • Access can be revoked at any time
  • All access is managed using Token Vault principles

In addition, the system evaluates every outgoing action using a simple risk model:

🟢 Safe actions are executed automatically 🟡 Sensitive actions require user confirmation 🔴 Dangerous actions are blocked entirely

This ensures that the AI does not just act on behalf of the user, but acts responsibly.

How we built it

We built the application using:

  • Auth0 for secure authentication
  • Token Vault concept for safe token handling
  • React.js for the frontend interface
  • JavaScript for implementing AI logic and interaction flow

The system is structured into:

  1. Authentication layer (user login)
  2. Permission control system (grant/revoke access)
  3. AI agent module (email actions simulation)

A rule-based risk evaluation system was implemented to classify actions into safe, sensitive, or dangerous categories before execution.

Challenges we ran into

  • Understanding how secure token handling works and how to represent Token Vault effectively
  • Designing a system that balances security and usability
  • Avoiding complexity while still demonstrating a real-world use case
  • Simulating email interactions without integrating full external APIs

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully demonstrating secure AI delegation using Token Vault principles
  • Building a complete working prototype within limited time
  • Creating a clear and interactive demo that showcases both functionality and security
  • Designing a system that can be easily extended to real-world integrations
  • Implemented a real-time decision layer that prevents unsafe AI actions before execution

What we learned

  • The importance of secure authentication and authorization
  • How token-based systems protect user data
  • How to design AI systems that respect user control and privacy
  • The value of simplifying complex technical ideas into usable solutions

What's next for this project

  • Integrating with real email services like Gmail API
  • Enhancing the AI agent with advanced language models
  • Adding real-time monitoring and anomaly detection
  • Implementing multi-factor authentication for stronger security
  • Expanding to other platforms like messaging and document automation
  • Introduce dynamic risk detection using AI to replace static rules

This project demonstrates that the future of AI is not just automation, but safe and controlled automation.
