Inspiration
Our project, "Guardians" was inspired by Lighthouse Free Medical Clinic's mission to serve uninsured and underinsured patients in Buffalo. We recognized the need for a system to help these patients navigate the complex world of health insurance and find appropriate care for chronic conditions beyond the clinic's scope.
What it does
Guardians is a web-based platform that guides patients through the insurance process and helps them find suitable healthcare providers. It assesses a patient's insurance status, assists in exploring insurance options, and provides referrals to healthcare providers that accept their insurance.
How we built it
We developed Guardians using the FERN stack: Firebase for real-time database and authentication Express.js for our server framework React for building our user interface Node.js as our runtime environment We integrated APIs from insurance providers and healthcare databases to offer real-time information on insurance plans and provider networks.
Challenges we ran into
Our main challenges included navigating complex healthcare regulations, ensuring data privacy compliance, and creating a user-friendly interface for a diverse patient population with varying levels of tech literacy.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of creating a tool that simplifies the insurance process for underserved communities and potentially improves access to necessary healthcare services. Our platform's ability to match patients with suitable healthcare providers based on their insurance constraints is particularly rewarding.
What we learned
We gained insights into the intricacies of the U.S. healthcare system, the importance of user-centered design in healthcare applications, and the challenges faced by free clinics in providing comprehensive care. We also deepened our understanding of the FERN stack and its capabilities in building robust web applications.
What's next for Guardians
We plan to expand the platform by incorporating more demographic data to suggest insurance providers with higher affinity towards specific client groups. We also aim to integrate telemedicine options and develop partnerships with local healthcare providers to streamline the referral process. Additionally, we'll explore using Firebase's machine learning capabilities to enhance our recommendation system.
