Inspiration

The inspiration for this project comes from personal experience and from the stories we hear. Often times, people who are visibly vulnerable (women, children, elderly, visible minorities, etc) can feel very scared walking home alone. We wanted to give them a sense of safety in times of worry and let them know they are not alone.

What it does

This project comes with many features. One of the features is the ability to record yourself. If you ever feel unsafe and can't reach anyone, recording yourself through our application will notify your emergency contact list that you've had a bad encounter or are not feeling safe with an SMS. It can give a sense of company when you are out alone and feel any danger. AssemblyAI also allows for the audio to be transcribed, which will be safe. Using its sentiment detection feature will also allow the app to know how the user is feeling. The project also intends to provide a heat map that shows where people have had bad encounters. This can help prevent someone from taking a route where they would feel unsafe.

How we built it

  • Front end: Vue.js
  • Backend: Flask (python)
  • Database: SQLite
  • Used apis: Google API (map), AssemblyAI (speech recognition), Twilio (SMS sending)

Challenges we ran into

We've encountered some issues when working with the google maps API. We couldn't fully integrate that in our project and had to hard code some of the data. Also, the lack of sleep. 😴

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of making it this far and actually have a prototype that we can show to y'all! We're also glad that we have integrated a couple of the API's provided to us. It was a lot of fun to use!

What we learned

We learned that putting the effort and staying consistent work gives result! We've also come to discover lots of amazing APIs offered to us that we otherwise wouldn't have known.

What's next for Guardians

Completing this would make us feel really good since this would actually help a lot of people in the world feel safer. It's also a great idea for a startup!
