Inspiration
Banking apps were built around forms, menus, and the mistaken assumption that everyone has time to tap through six screens to send a friend €40. They don't. We saw older users getting lost in the "chrome" of complex UIs and young adults feeling anxious about making mistakes with their money. We wanted to remove the "interface cost" and replace it with a human-like relationship—making banking as simple as having a conversation with a friend you trust.
What it does
GuardianAI is a multimodal, avatar-led banking layer built on top of the existing bunq banking app. Instead of navigating menus, you simply talk to your animated companion.
- Agentic Banking: Tell it to move money, sort savings, or summarize spending. It executes the API calls for you.
- Vision-Powered: Snap a photo of a receipt, and GuardianAI automatically parses the data to split the bill and send payment requests via WhatsApp.
- Fraud Protection: Show it a suspicious text or a sketchy website screenshot. It analyzes the risk in real-time, providing a safety net for the less tech-savvy.
- Human-Centric UI: A voice-first interface that confirms actions aloud, ensuring you never "click the wrong button" again.
How we built it
We built a responsive web platform that bridges the gap between high-level AI reasoning and the bunq API.
- The Brain: Powered by Claude Opus 4.6, utilizing its advanced tool-calling capabilities to interact with banking data.
- Multimodal Stack: We integrated web search, image understanding, and messaging tools to allow the agent to "see" receipts and "verify" external links.
- Frontend: Developed a custom web interface featuring a reactive, animated avatar to provide a friendly, non-intimidating presence.
- Integration: Deeply integrated with bunq’s toolset to ensure every transaction is secure and authorized by the user’s voice.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was latency—ensuring the conversation feels natural while the AI processes voice input, reasons through a banking request, and executes an API call. We also worked hard on "Guardrail Logic" to ensure the AI doesn't just act, but confirms intent, which is critical when dealing with real-world finances.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of the Hands Free Banking Experience. Being able to talk to the avatar makes the experience of banking way simplier for all ages. Integrating all the features of bunq to achieve this experience requires a lot of time and effort which is another reason we are proud of this accomplishment. Where developers look to add features, our team has added every feature possible and even better, all from just speech commands.
What we learned
We learned that the future of Fintech isn't just about "more features"—it’s about accessibility. By stripping away the UI and focusing on voice and vision, we realized how much friction we can remove for people with accessibility needs or those who aren't "tech-natives." It is far more important to move with the rest of the tech industry rather than focus on features which end up being a gimmick.
What's next for GuardianAI
The road is wide open for a more proactive assistant:
- Long-term Memory: Implementing RAG on AWS so GuardianAI learns your specific financial rhythms, priorities, and circle of friends.
- Proactive Monitoring: Flagging anomalies or upcoming bills before you even have to ask.
- Multi-Agent Architecture: Deploying specialized agents to handle complex tasks like insurance disputes or end-of-month projections.
- Emergency Handoff: Live screen-sharing for a human handoff when a user is genuinely scared or confused.
- End-To-End Agent: Ability to use the avatar from download to delete, account creation to deletion such that it can do every task on the app.
One interface. Your voice. Your bank.
