Inspiration
Women’s period tracker tools currently lack safety features and personalization. We were inspired to create an all-encompassing tool that integrates menstrual tracking with proactive safety features in one platform.
By combining period tracking, live location sharing, alarms, etc. Haven can support users in day-to-day use and in moments of urgency. The personalization quiz tailors recommendations and resources to each user in order to make the experience more relevant and supportive.
What it does
Our app aims to support women by bringing peace of mind and convenience to users with the following functions: period tracking, emergency contact list, personalization quiz (providing users with resources and suggestions relating to their own cycle/preferences), an alarm, and users also have the option to share their live location with contacts.
How we built it
We designed the prototype of our app - its UI and the basic functions we wanted in Figma first, then created a polished webpage in HTML and CSS on Codepen. The backend API is written in Javascript.
Challenges we ran into
We initially had trouble with starting our project because most of our team members lived in different time zones and it was difficult to schedule meetings/check-in's. We decided it would be best if we delegated tasks and each focused on one part and report back to each other whenever we have completed a portion of the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was our first hackathon and we're incredibly pleased with the work we got done despite our limited experience and difficulty with coordination at first. We can all agree that we learned various new skills from this project such as the basics of Figma and UI-building, as well as how to collaborate and communicate our ideas effectively within a team. Additionally, we are proud to contribute something tangible that supports women's health and safety.
What we learned
We learned how to use online tools such as Figma and Codepen and the general workflow of building a webapp. This project also helped us understand how technology and social justice intersect and the way apps can act as a creative solution for global problems.
What's next for Haven
We would like to further develop Haven into a fully functioning app. This would involve implementing backend services like secure data storage (incredibly important for a period tracking app since we are collecting intimate health data) as well as improving accessibility features (such as clearer icons, or high-contrast mode for low-vision users).
