Inspiration

There were 1,460,388 deaths in the whole world due to coronavirus. Many deaths were due to the unavailability of proper medical help at the time of need. Also, Cardiovascular diseases are the number 1 cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year. Most of the deaths were due to late detection of disease or unavailability of medical help in time.

Also, In this Coronavirus pandemic, there is no way to detect if people are maintaining social distancing or not as social distancing is the only way to stop COVID-19!!

Nowadays lot of senior citizens are living alone with serious health risks, so their loved ones are really worried about them and want to know about their health conditions once in a while.

What it does

So, we came up with Guardian, a smart health band capable of solving all the listed problems

  • It has inbuilt heart rate and oximeter sensor which can be used for remote health monitoring. It can be used by heart patients as to when any deviation in the health of the user is observed it provides real-time alerts through text SMS.

  • It can be used by Senior citizens living alone as it would help their loved ones keep track of their health through the mobile app and get real-time updates through SMS if anything goes wrong.

  • Can be used at hospitals, offices or even at crowded places to maintain social distancing.

  • Using our tool the doctors can monitor over a large number of the patient simultaneously as they can see all the vitals of the patients and attend first to serious patients which provide effective doctor management in times of need especially in the pandemic as the number of patients are large and health workers are less.

  • And our band just costs as low as $20 so it can be used for mass production!!!

How we built it

We built our electronics on Nodemcu mini as it provides us with the power of esp8266 in a small size with Max30100 as our sensor for oxygen and heartrate monitoring, then using Oled to display the data and buzzer to alert the user when social distancing is not maintained. We used blynk to display data on the app. Then using Thingspeak and Twilio we made the SMS service.

Challenges we ran into

  • We faced a lot of problem in wiring the hardware as we used battery to power it
  • We spent hours fixing the oximeter sensor as it did not work properly due to some unknown reason due to which we would get very weird readings.
  • The testing of our hardware was really difficult as we could not work together in this pandemic.

Accomplishments that we are proud of

  • It was our first time using Blynk for making app to display data and we powered the nodemcu using battery and not using a USB cable.
  • We triggered text messages for the first time from an IoT device.

What we learned

  • We learnt how to trigger SMS through NodeMCU.
  • Learnt to make app using Blynk
  • Learnt using the Twilio API.
  • Working with sensors
