What's next for GuardGrove — home security on Ring

Inspiration

We noticed that many home security users are overwhelmed by false positives from standard motion sensors. We wanted to create a system that filters out noise and focuses on genuine security threats. Our goal was to bridge the gap between raw video footage and intelligent security alerts.

What it does

GuardGrove acts as an intelligent orchestration layer for home security. It processes streams from Ring devices and uses computer vision to distinguish between pets, vehicles, and potential human intruders. This ensures that homeowners receive critical alerts only when a real risk is detected on their property.

How we built it

We built the backend using FastAPI to handle incoming webhooks and API requests efficiently. We containerized our application using Amazon ECS with Fargate to ensure scalability and high availability. For the heavy lifting of image analysis, we utilized Amazon SageMaker to deploy our custom object detection models.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was managing the latency between the Ring trigger and the SageMaker inference engine. We also struggled with optimizing the data pipeline to ensure that FastAPI could handle concurrent streams without bottleneck. Tuning the models to reduce false alarms in varying lighting required significant iterative testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the seamless integration between the Ring API and our AWS-hosted infrastructure. We successfully managed to achieve high accuracy in human detection while maintaining low computational overhead. Seeing the system correctly identify a threat in real-time was a major win for our team.

What we learned

We learned a lot about handling real-time video data streams in a serverless environment. We also gained deep insights into how to properly configure SageMaker endpoints for cost-effective machine learning inference. This project deepened our understanding of event-driven architecture in the IoT space.

What's next for GuardGrove

We plan to expand our model library to include license plate recognition and package delivery detection. We also want to implement a more robust dashboard for developers to tune their security parameters. GuardGrove will continue to evolve as a comprehensive toolkit for the Ring community.
