Inspiration

With the increasing prevalence of social medial, there has been an increasing number of sex offenders due to the vulnerability of children online which urges the need for protection against them for the safety of children and parents.

What it does

A facial detection system incorporated into a security camera that alerts the resident and security whenever it detects a sexual offender and criminals with a record.

How we built it

We coded the entire project in Python, using the Google Cloud Vision API to integrate facial recognition technology. Then, we took data from Georgia's sex offender list and are using those images to compare with the camera.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we ran into was learning and being able to implement the facial recognition technology, as the Google API is very complicated in that regard. This took a lot of time to resolve and we are very happy with our end result as we were able to accomplish the majority of what we intended in such a short time frame.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

For this Hackathon, we had just two days to think of an idea, code the program for the idea, and build the frameworks for our business. This was an unbelievably short time frame and we are very proud that we could successfully complete what was required of us. Furthermore, we are proud that we learned a lot about facial recognition as being able to implement it as it was a very arduous task.

What we learned

Prior to this Hackathon, none of us knew how to integrate the Google Vision API with Python code successfully, and learning how to do that was a very large learning curve that we managed to overcome. We also learned quite a lot about the business aspect, learning about how to be able to penetrate the market successfully with our idea through different forms of advertising.

What's next for Guard Cam

We hope to be able to scale Guard Cam, adding in new features such as blacklists, etc. This means that the user will be notified if anybody added to a blacklist is in the near vicinity (does not have to be criminals).
