Inspiration

Our team was deeply curious about how people can use data to further understand how different communities compare to each other. While communities are often compared to each other by the cost of housing, very little is know about crime rates, access to healthcare, access to education and access to community resources. The cost of housing is an important factor in decision-making for many families, it is also important to consider the other elements that form a community. We wish to provide an exploratory platform for users to discover how communities rank against each other and help them make housing decisions in the future.

What it does

Discover GTA is a digital dashboard with a map-view of the Greater Toronto Area. Users will be able to filter data based on the following communities: Ajax, Brampton, Markham, Mississauga, Oshawa, Pickering and Toronto. From there, they can view data about the socioeconomic factors such as access to education, access to healthcare, access to community resources and the crime rates in the community in a bar graph.

How we built it

The visualizations of the project were made with Geopandas and Pandas. The web app was built with Streamlit.

Challenges we ran into

We team ran into several challenges during the project. There were difficulties making our python compatible with Streamlit. We also had difficulties finding relevant data and standardizing it. A lot of data was out of date and did not offer insight into municipalities. In addition, the populations used were not up to date since the 2021 Census was not out yet.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our data science members challenged themselves to learn new technologies for this hackathon. We learning how to make a map using Geopands, how to use Streamlit and how to turn data into a deliverable. The product manager got to write her first PRD.

What we learned

Our team got to learn how to use new technologies such as Streamlit and Geopandas as well as how to write product documentation.

What's next for Discover GTA

We would like to further expand our platform by adding the rest of the communities in the GTA, more socioeconomic factors (ie. access to food, etc) and adding more features such as filtering by demographics (ie. age, gender, race, etc).
