About the Project: Grub – A Food Delivery App
Grub is a modern food delivery app designed to connect users with local restaurants, offering an easy, reliable, and enjoyable way to get meals delivered to their doorsteps.
Inspiration
The idea for Grub came from observing how cluttered and overwhelming many food delivery apps can be. I wanted to build something that felt faster, cleaner, and more user-friendly—especially for smaller communities that are often overlooked by big platforms. The pandemic also highlighted the importance of accessible food delivery, which motivated me to create a solution that could be scaled for both urban and rural areas.
How I Built It
Grub was built using a combination of technologies:
- Frontend: React Native for cross-platform mobile support
- Backend: Node.js with Express.js for API routes
- Database: MongoDB for storing restaurant, order, and user data
- Authentication: Supabase for secure user login and account management
- Deployment: Netlify for the backend and Expo for mobile testing
What I Learned
Working on Grub taught me a lot about:
- Building scalable APIs for real-time data handling
- Managing app state effectively using tools like Redux
- UX/UI design for mobile platforms
- Handling payment integration (Stripe) securely
- Working with location-based services
Challenges
While building Grub, I faced several challenges:
- Real-time Order Tracking: Implementing live tracking without draining the phone’s battery was tricky. I had to balance accuracy with performance.
- Restaurant Onboarding System: Creating a simple, secure portal for restaurant owners to manage their menus was more complex than expected.
- UI Consistency: Ensuring the UI looked and worked well across various devices and screen sizes required a lot of testing and adjustments.
- Offline Functionality: I wanted parts of the app to be usable even with poor connectivity, which involved caching and careful data sync logic.
Grub is still a work in progress, but it has already helped me grow immensely as a developer and designer. I'm excited to continue iterating on it and exploring new features like group ordering and loyalty rewards.
