We noticed that many including ourselves, struggle with taking care of household plants because of our hectic schedules. Another problem we noticed many college students have is taking time out of their day to take care of their mental health and be mindful. We thought why not combine both!

What it does

Growth is a plant-raising game that helps you monitor your health by nursing a plant based on how well you take care of yourself. It is a fully automated system that based on the type of plant, provides the required amount of water and light. You only need to take 5 min out of your day to maintain the system. To get started, you need to connect a pulse monitor and start the meditation module on our website. Furthermore, the humidity sensor can be used to either sense the moisture of your lips indicating you hydration levels through touch/lips. Once, your pulse reaches a relaxed state, the "uv" (we had to use an OLED as the parts were not available) light will turn on. In addition, if you are hydrated enough, the system will start dripping water creating an even more relaxed environment. Every time you decide to mediate, the system will upkeep your plant for 24 hours. In order for you to take care of your plants, you need to take care of yourself. Our website also has mini planting games you can play as well as see your updated hydration and pulse rates.

How we built it

We have three parts of our design:

  1. The mechanical device 3-D printed from CAD design.
  2. The electronics that are stored in the devices consist heart rate sensor, humidity sensor, water pump, and light, all controlled by ESP32 and Arduino Uno.
  3. A website with MySQL database for the users to check their real time health status

Challenges we ran into

Setting up the database and connecting the modules wirelessly proved to be an exciting challenge. We faced some expected results in the 3D printed device. We also ran into some difficulties integrating our system.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our environmental friendly device that encourages you to take some time from your busy day and be mindful for 5 min. Aside from the skills that we learned, we are also proud of solving the issues and unexpected that we ran into.

What we learned

We learned that teamwork and communication is very important. We learned many technical skills such as Fusion360, connecting microcontroller to http, and web developing. Since we have members from three different majors, we were also able to learn from each other from our skills of expertise and practice interdisciplinary skills from each other.

What's next for Growth

The great part of this project there are lots of features we can add. For the website, we can include more games and allow for user input to determine what the device does. We can also include more sensors to measure health conditions. But most of all, we can make the device more customer friendly and simplify the circuity.
