Inspiration

Project Inspiration: Community Gardening

The inspiration for this project was the idea of bringing the community together through gardening. Meeting new people has become especially challenging since the Covid pandemic, and we thought this would be a great way for people to connect. Gardening emerged as a perfect activity to center our idea around, as it can be easily done in big groups.

After being inside for a long time, going outside for some activity can significantly improve mental health, which has degraded in many people. Engaging in gardening not only provides a fulfilling and purposeful activity but also allows individuals to enjoy the outdoors, contributing positively to their overall well-being.

Project Goals:

  • Community Connection: Foster a sense of belonging and community by bringing people together through gardening activities.
  • New Relationships: Provide opportunities for individuals to meet and interact with new people in a safe and outdoor environment.
  • Mental Health: Promote mental well-being by encouraging outdoor activities and reconnecting with nature.

By focusing on gardening, we aim to create a space where people can share knowledge, collaborate, and grow togetherβ€”both as a community and as individuals.

How we built it

The website was built using HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

Challenges we ran into

Main problem was the formatting of various objects on the website. Made some of the website look uneven or off-center. Using some public CSS files conflicted with other CSS files caused pages to be styled wrong.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Getting most of the functionality that we want into the build of our website and making it somewhat good looking.

What we learned

We learned about the different techniques that we can use to achieve the website that we envisioned using Javascript, CSS, and HTML. We also learned about limiting the scope of our project. It is nice to be ambitious but in the specific time frame, aiming for a too big of a project could lead to more frustration and less chance of a working product. The splitting of work load was also a valuable skill to learn.

What's next for GrowShare

The original idea of the website was to implement it as an app but due to lack of current knowledge and time constraints, so the next phase was to implement a mobile version of our website. Right now, the website does not transfer very well to mobile. Adding more functionality with back-end coding. Cleaning up the code is also a priority in order to make it more maintainable and sustainable.
