Inspiration

Both of our children were born with low birth weights, and from the very beginning, tracking their growth became a top priority. We closely monitored their height, weight, and developmental milestones, not just at checkups, but in the weeks in between, when changes can go unnoticed.

Our daughter wasn’t eating enough, and by the time her pediatrician flagged it, we had to play catch-up to avoid long term risks associated with low birth weight. We had to monitor her carefully to get her back on track. Our son was born several months early, putting him at higher risk for developmental delays. This meant we needed even more visibility into his progress.

That’s why we built Growbie Milestone Tracker. Growbie gives parents a simple, powerful way to track their children's growth and development, stay informed between visits, and feel confident they're catching what matters most — early.

What it does

Growbie Milestone Tracker is a parent-friendly app that can be used to track children’s height, weight, and developmental milestones over time. It alerts parents to any areas where a child may be falling behind, provides helpful activities to encourage development, and prompts parents to consult a pediatrician when needed.

How we built it

I used Bolt to build out the app features, React Native for cross-platform mobile development, Netlify to deploy the app, Supabase to prepare for scaling, and Entri for the domain. I also used Github for version control.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was ensuring the CDC data was accurately being used to plot the growth curves. I had to add tests to ensure the weight and growth curves were being used correctly. There were also some challenges transitioning from a web app to mobile app. The spacing wasn't great so there were a lot of style adjustments I had to make after downloading the web version from bolt.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud I build a fully functioning prototype within the hackathon timeframe — including milestone tracking logic, growth chart visualizations, and a dashboard that can be used for the entire family. I hope this app can make growth tracking easier for other families and alleviate some of the stress associated with supporting children with growth challenges or developmental delays.

What we learned

I learned that taking an app from idea to launch is easy with Bolt. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to bring a project to life without having to code to build it out.

What's next for Growbie Milestone Tracker

My next steps include launching the iOS app in the app store and sharing the app in parent communities. I'll gather feedback and continue to iterate on the app's features. I would also like to add support for additional languages so that the app is accessible to people of various backgrounds. Ultimately, I want Growbie to become a trusted companion in every parent’s toolkit.

Challenge Compliance

  • Custom Domain Challenge: I used Entri to get the domain Growbie.online
  • Deploy Challenge: I deployed the app with Netlify
  • Startup Challenge: I used Supabase to build out the database and authentication so I can scale the userbase.
