Inspiration

There are over 2 billion tons of food that get thrown away every year. Despite this, people are still dying of hunger. We will make food as accessible as running water. We will make quality food a basic human right. We will shorted the distance between food production and food consumption.

What it does

The Growable Alexa Skill is able to provide gardeners with information on how to grow higher quality and more sustainable crops.

The Growable hardware actively reports the status of your Garden with:

  • Image Data (camera)
  • Temperature (room)
  • Humidity (room)
  • Soil Humidity
  • Light Level (lux)

How I built it

We built the Alexa Skill using the Jovo Framework

We built the hardware using

  • raspberry pi
  • raspberry pi camera
  • i2c soil sensor
  • i2c temperature sensor

Challenges I ran into

  • Account Linking is where we are currently facing challenges. We need to connect the gardeners data (raspberry pi) to Amazon Alexa so customers can learn customized tips for their garden.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • We are actively processing images! We are collecting image data using the Raspberry Pi to collect additional information about the growth of our plants using the Growable System.

What I learned

I learned it is better to use frame-design over graph-based design for Alexa Skills. While graph design was well-equipped to handle traditional interfaces, frame-based design is much better at modeling how customers interact with voice assistants.

What's next for Growable

Next step is adding account linking to the Growable Alexa Skill so customers can access customized data about their garden with their voice.
