Inspiration
This application is inspired by our wishful thinking while in long distance relationships. We wanted a way to simply represent that we're thinking of someone, while also creating a digital representation of the bond being built with each interaction.
With Snapchat and BeReal being so popular, we also added a "quest" feature. Challenge your grove members to photo missions, like "send me your cat" or "whatcha eating for lunch?" Every interaction gives you xp to make your tree grow a little more.
We expanded it to accommodate platonic friends as well, as romantic relationships aren't the only important relationships in our lives.
What it does
The app has a limited number of friends you can have in your inner circle, forming a "grove". You interact with your grove by pinging your friends a "shake" notification, or by giving out a photo quests to one of your friends. You can also send good morning/night pings, set your status, view your friends' statuses, complete system given photo quests, and look at your grove's wishlists for gift giving plans. It also supports user authentication.
How we built it
svelte, Django, sql, tailwind, bootstrap
Challenges we ran into
Svelte doesn't get along 100% with either tailwind or bootstrap, so some frontend tasks were tricky to figure out.
The backend ran into some difficulty with micronaut before moving to Django, especially since we had no backend web development prior to project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Learning how to use Django. There is a lot of attention to detail in the UI, and almost everything is perfectly aligned, and responsive to screen sizes.
What we learned
Django, Svelte, Tailwind
What's next for Grove
Team members plan to continue working it. This is a project we're passionate about as it is something we would use in our daily lives. We will be reworking frontend to optimize for mobile, and improving the backend to increase functionality
