FEMINOMICS: A Comprehensive Financial Literacy Platform Created by Women, for Women
Inspiration
We found our inspiration after watching a video where a social experiment was done that showed the large gap between men and women in terms of financial literacy. Financial literacy is important as it allows you to set yourself up for success in the long-term through retirement savings and protects you from falling victim to financial fraud. Poor financial literacy inhibits financial independence, making it more likely for women to rely on their partners for support, possibly even staying in abusive situations as a result. As a means to fix this issue, we aim to demystify personal finance and equip women with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive in their financial literacy journey.
What Does It Do?
Upon opening the website, the user will be prompted to play our demo game that is a fun and creative gateway to easing our users into understanding how important and risky financial choices can be. The demo game can also be accessed through the app. Another feature we have a budget planner that would ask the user to input their monthly income, necessities, and debt to calculate how much the user should set aside each month depending on their savings goals and/or how quickly they would want to pay off their debt. We also have a chatbot designed to answer the user's questions pertaining to finance that is directly linked to our Raspberry Pi hardware.
How We Built It
We built the website and the demo game using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The Raspberry Pi chatbot was created using Python. For the app design, we used Figma.
Challenges We Ran Into
With the Raspberry Pi, we found it difficult to connect to Wi-Fi. We asked the leader of the Raspberry Pi workshop, Abbaas Alif Mohammed Nishar, for assistance. We found a solution that wasn't perfect, but it worked enough to make presenting the Raspberry Pi aspect possible. The website also had some issues, and after the assistance of mentor Facundo Figueroa, we were able to fix them. We give a special thanks to both Abbaas and Facundo for their help. We had problems creating the game as well, since we have no prior experience with JavaScript. The different elements in HTML along with the CSS were difficult to mix and find the sought after look. After a while of researching the functions in JavaScript, we were able to find a workaround that helped achieve the current website,.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We are so proud of the hard work and dedication each team member contributed to this project. We also take pride in what we accomplished in such a short period of time. This would include the chatbot on the Raspberry Pi, the website, the demo game, as well as the Figma app prototype.
What We Learned
We learned how to communicate effectively and collaborated effortlessly due to this, despite all of us only just meeting each other for the first time. Additionally, we learned how to use various coding programs to create things we haven't before to solve the issue of the financial literacy gender gap.
What's Next for FEMINOMICS?
The features on the website and app would need to be fleshed out more and the demo game can incorporate AI to generate scenarios and results based on the user's actions to keep it more interesting and avoid us having to hardcode them. The Raspberry Pi also intends to eventually work as an accessible voice-to-text tool for those who cannot or find it hard to type questions into the chatbot. The team behind FEMINOMICS intends to continue our journey in Computer Science/Computer Information Systems, this will not be the last you hear from us!
