Inspiration: The inspiration behind GTS stems from a commitment to protecting vulnerable populations during humanitarian crises. The goal was to build an "invisible" digital shield for infrastructure by bridging the gap between grassroots observations and timely, reliable field action when early warning data is lacking.
What it does: GTS is a decentralized, offline-first Progressive Web App (PWA) designed to bridge the last-mile gap in early crisis response. It allows community members and first responders to log critical, geolocated reports—such as floods or disease outbreaks—even when connectivity is completely compromised. These reports sync to a database where an automated anomaly engine clusters the data to trigger verified, actionable alerts for authorities, transforming raw grassroots observations into reliable geospatial intelligence.
How we built it: The project was developed as a Progressive Web App utilizing Next.js for data capture, Node.js for the backend anomaly engine, and Firebase for database management to handle real-time synchronization and offline-first capabilities.
Challenges we ran into: Key challenges included managing systemic complexity, handling context-dependent and unreliable data during crisis scenarios, and ensuring seamless offline-to-online data synchronization.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: Successfully architecting predictive calmness out of chaos, creating a reliable decentralized data-gathering flow, and effectively bridging both technical and civic divides to deliver a robust crisis response tool.
What we learned: The development process highlighted vital lessons in handling messy, distributed data sets, managing system complexity under pressure, and maximizing productivity through advanced development workflows.
What's next for Ground Truth System GTS: Future plans focus on scaling adoption for global urban environments, expanding the system's predictive capabilities, and maturing the platform into a comprehensive digital twin for community resilience.
