Inspiration

Track: Double Major Students majoring in Dance have to develop choreographies as a component of their major, and it can be a struggle workshopping this choreography, visualising and editing the movements, amidst everyone’s busy schedules.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to create and visualise a group choreo without having to get everyone in the same room?

What it does

groogie is a choreography simulator. The user can move 3D models of dancers around a stage space, and assign them various dance steps at different times, and then play back the choreography they have blocked, selecting an individual dancer or the ensemble as a whole.

This allows Dance majors to create a plan and recording of their choreography to assist them in the creative process and break down the choreo for other dancers.

How we built it

Using Three.js, React and Cursor.

Challenges we ran into

Time management was difficult and we weren't able to implement the motion capture.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud that we were able to execute an MVP that works for the intended use case.

What's next for groogie

In the future, groogie aims to implement kinesiology and dance education use cases, as well as employ motion capture technology, being able to capture the user's created dance moves. Experts could use the program to identify potentially injurious or problematic dance moves, allowing them to modify or avoid these movements safely, as well as assist students with training and practice.

The versatility of this app shows no bounds, and we envision a world where all dance students can confidently plan, experiment, and perfect their choreography, developing both skill and creativity in a safe, guided environment.
