Inspiration:
Since we are living in a hostel, we understood how difficult it can be to manage shared expenses. Small things like deciding who should buy groceries or how to split the cost often lead to unnecessary arguments or confusion. Sometimes, instead of debating who should go buy items, we thought — what if we just had one shared list where everything is tracked clearly?
We realized that the problem wasn’t the money itself, but the lack of transparency. So we decided to build GroceShare — a simple solution to make shared spending organized, fair, and stress-free.
What it does:
GroceShare helps roommates track shared grocery expenses and automatically calculate each person’s share.
Users can:
Add grocery purchases
See who paid
Automatically split the cost among roommates
View balances clearly (who owes whom)
Avoid manual calculations and confusion
How we built it:
We built GroceShare as a web application.
Frontend:
HTML
CSS
JavaScript / TypeScript
The system handles:
Expense recording
Share calculation logic
Balance tracking display
Challenges we ran into:
The main challenge was designing the calculation logic correctly.
Splitting expenses sounds simple, but it becomes tricky when:
Different people pay at different times
Multiple purchases exist
Balances must update dynamically.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
Built a working shared expense tracker from scratch
Implemented automatic split calculations
Designed a clean and understandable interface
Turned a real-life daily problem into a usable solution.
What we learned:
We learned:
How real-world problems differ from textbook problems
Structuring logic for financial calculations
Importance of UI clarity in productivity apps
Working as a team and dividing responsibilities
What's next for GroceShare:
In the future, we plan to expand GroceShare into a complete roommate expense ecosystem:
Group joining via shareable link
Direct grocery & food ordering integration
Instant split payment after purchase
Partnering with delivery platforms for offers
Notifications and reminders
