Inspiration

GroceryMate started from a simple everyday problem: buying groceries and later forgetting what we already have at home. Sometimes food gets pushed to the back of the fridge or cupboard and ends up expiring.

I wanted to build something simple that could help people keep track of their groceries, reduce food waste, and actually use the food they already bought.

What it does

GroceryMate helps users keep track of the groceries they have at home.

Users can add their groceries, keep an eye on expiry dates, get reminders when food is about to expire, and discover recipe ideas based on the ingredients they already have.

The goal is to make managing groceries less stressful and reduce unnecessary food waste.

How we built it

We started by focusing on the problem before thinking about features. From there, we identified the core features needed for a simple MVP and worked on the user experience around them.

The project was built with a focus on keeping the experience simple, easy to understand, and useful for everyday users.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was deciding what should actually be part of the first version. There were a lot of ideas we could add, but we had to learn to separate the "nice to have" features from the features that actually solve the main problem.

We also had to think about how to make expiry tracking and reminders useful without making the app complicated.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we were able to take a simple everyday problem and turn it into a product idea with a clear purpose.

We're also proud of the process of moving from an idea to something that can actually be used and improved based on user feedback.

What we learned

GroceryMate taught us that good products don't always start with complicated ideas. Sometimes, the best place to start is with a problem people experience every day.

We also learned more about prioritising features, thinking from the user's perspective, and building an MVP instead of trying to build everything at once.

What's next for GroceryMate

The next step is to improve the user experience and test GroceryMate with real users.

We also want to explore smarter recipe recommendations, better expiry notifications, shopping list features, and eventually personalised suggestions that help users save money and waste less food.

The goal is simple: help people buy smarter, waste less, and make better use of the food they already have.
