Inspiration
In our time-constrained world, we often find ourselves lacking the time to shop for groceries. Incidental delivery would alleviate this whilst also bringing greater reduction to our overall carbon footprint but reducing the number of individual trips on a day-today basis.
What it does
A geolocation-based mobile application that incentivises people that are already within the area to help out their local community by shopping and dropping off a load of groceries along the way home whilst being rewarded for doing so. This alleviates the stress of the day-to-day schedule of people who often find themselves lacking in the time and energy to constantly go out to do their daily groceries.
How we built it
By utilising a location and incentive-based system, we can not only provide the local community an ability to connect with one another but also the convenience of fast and incidental delivery. The recent rise of blockchain has also provided a secure and easy implementation of safe transactions backed by smart contracts. This can provide customers with a sense of security and trust in the transaction system. We plan to implement pre-existing online grocery infrastructure into our application.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge that we ran into was identifying a validated societal problem and tailoring a solution for it whilst incorporating the benfits of blockchain.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
By emphasising the incidental and location-based aspect of the app, we hope to draw together the local community of those who were already on the way to the shops and those who don't have the time to go to the shops.
What we learned
That grocery shopping is a major part of our daily lives and can take up a large portion of our time and this can detract from the amount of limited free time of busy individuals. We found that by combining people's shopping together, we could greatly reduce the carbon footprint of households.
What's next for Grocery Run
We plan to scale Grocery Run to not only incorporate simple grocery lists but to also have a meal plan embedded so that users can just choose a set meal and a preset list is entered into the system. This is because we found that the majority of people who lacked the time to do groceries would also prefer a set meal system so that they didn't have to worry about curating the shopping list.
