Inspiration
Due to the theme being environmentalism, we thought about what could help the environment and we all collectively agreed that food waste was a big problem. We thought of a website that could keep track of expiry dates to better organize your fridge and set out to cement our vision into a product.
What it does
The website that we created keeps track of food and their expiry dates. It has access to simple features like error handling, a calendar to pick a date, and a connection to a MongoDB database.
How we built it
We used the MERN (MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, Node.js) stack to create this website. As for languages, it consists of mostly Javascript, and a bit of CSS and HTML.
Challenges we ran into
Due to it being the first time that we successfully created a website using MERN, we ran into a lot of difficulties. Naming a few: getting used to frontend, learning how to use different libraries, a lot of technical difficulties, and not being able to implement some of the features that we originally set out to implement.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're extremely proud to have successfully produced a functional web app using the MERN stack for the first time in our lives!
What we learned
Other than what was previously mentioned, we learnt a lot about how websites work in general. From concepts like middleware to connecting frontend to backend we went through a lot of material in the last few days. Having a project and deadline helped boost our learning process.
What's next for Groceraid
There are a lot of features we would like to add, in the future, we would like to implement things like AI and much more.
