Inspiration
We live in a world with limited resources right? That includes us broke college students, and people trying to survive in this time of high inflation (why is a house so expensive???) So, what would we want to do...? Save money of course! Using Grocery.AI, find the cheapest products near you (since of course you wouldn't want to spend the extra $2 on public transportation going all the way to Costco). You save money on groceries, transportation, and save time going from place to place searching for all the groceries on your list. In Shopify's words, we will "make customers happier"!
What it does
Upload your grocery list to our website and enable your location. The website immediately shows you where you can shop nearby, while also calculating the cheapest option for all your groceries in one go! Sign in to save your grocery list. Instantly compare different stores to determine the best one according to your needs, whether it is the cheapest products or the closest to your current location.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create the website. We used MongoDB for the backend database to store information on the stores and grocery products. We used the Windsurf IDE to code, and the automatic console error sending and screenshots to the intelligent code assistance. We feed information to Gemini to create a chatbot and calculate which store is the best choice based on the grocery list.
Challenges we ran into
It was also difficult to get MongoDB to connect correctly and we kept using up all the Gemini credits.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Getting all of the project to actually come together. It took a lot of troubleshooting and we ran into many small problems that needed to be fixed. Seeing it all slowly work to actually become the project we had in mind was definitely really rewarding.
What we learned
We learned a lot about working under a time crunch and utilizing Github to collaborate effectively. We also learned how to use a lot of new tools and frameworks such as Windsurf, MongoDB, and Gemini.
What's next for Grocery.AI
Grocery.AI has vast potential to be useful in not just groceries, but also other products, such as toilet paper, pencils, and shoes! It is the ultimate coupon book, but instead of waiting and hoping that your favourite items will go on sale, we find the cheapest products right now at this instant through AI analysis. Through the use of AI, Grocery.AI can facilitate product matching, since some product names might differ, price forecasting (e.g., prices rise in winter), and personalized recommendation (such as cheaper or healthier alternatives). In the future, Grocery.AI could make ordering groceries way easier by coordinating with stores directly online, so that people would not have to go in person anymore. We could also potentially use an authentication platform for people to make an account, which could be utilized a bit more to allow users to save their favourite shopping locations. It could also be useful to save grocery lists as well, so that users are able to save their list for later shopping, or just continue adding throughout the week while they come up with more to buy. We can utilize APIs of stores (such as Walmart, No Frills, Superstore, etc) in order to get their prices directly in real-time, so that users can get real comparisons and updates when there are discounts.
