31 billion CDN worth of food wasted each year 14.6 billion CDN comes from individual households (http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/food-waste-costs-canada-31b-a-year-report-says-1.2869708) Why it happens: Stores encourage buying in bulk Misunderstanding of how long and where food can be store “Reverse meal planning” can help people better plan their use of food Helps people make informed decisions while grocery shopping

What it does

Android app catered to student community (or similar demographic) User is able to input grocery items and their expiration dates (preset values also included) App reminds user when the food item is about to expire (<7 days) Also provides a visual depiction of what items are about to expire soon The goal is to prevent unnecessary food waste

How we built it

We used Android studio, java, xml

Challenges we ran into

issues with the dev environment, implementing database

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Having a working prototype that does not crash

What's next for groceReemindr

Next Steps: Help implement a barter system where students can give away food that might go bad (in case they’re leaving for the weekend etc) to prevent food waste Potentially generate revenue by partnering with local grocery stores to clear inventory that might be expiring soon The app can also be further developed to make recipe suggestions based on available ingredients (“at risk of expiration”)
