We were inspired by food, and how comfortable and familiar flavors, as well as the act of cooking in itself, eased our college transition. We wanted grilled cheese and tomato soup—the ultimate comfort food—to act as a vessel representing "moments of mindfulness," activities our app would feature to encourage our users to be truly present and aware of themselves and those around them.

What it does

Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup is an app that offers activities that allow users to experience mindfulness and earn "ingredients." Activities include yoga sessions, breathing exercises, and crafts. Ingredients act as a fun incentive—at the end of each day, a user's ingredients are combined to create a special dish, which populates the user's "recipe book," a deck of unique collectible dishes. Users can connect with friends to share these recipes, all while strengthening and channeling their innate awareness.

How we built it

Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup was built in XCode, an Apple-built framework on which applications can be built.

Challenges we ran into

No members of our team had ever worked with XCode or Swift, the language on which it is based. Because of this, we ran into a lot of problems that could've been solved easily but ended up taking significant time due to our lack of a basic Swift foundation. However, it was incredibly rewarding and exciting to learn as we built!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're incredibly proud of our deliverable—the fact that we were able to present a functional app despite having never done anything of this vein was very rewarding for each of us!

What we learned

We learned a lot of Swift and XCode, but beyond the technical, we learned a lot about teamwork. We definitely had fun with our ideation process, but we also developed techniques in talking through and generating unique ideas. We also went to a multitude of workshops and talked to company representatives, and got to experience tech in fields we hadn't yet interacted with as freshmen.

What's next for Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup

24 hours wasn't enough for all we wanted to do with this app, and there's always room for improvement. We've been joking about this app for a while now, and it was extremely exciting to see it come to life. We hope to continue to add functions, improve the readability, and make the interface more fun for the user!
