Inspiration

In the real world, it's important to think about to how to distribute our limited resources to fight the important battles. We thought it would be good to represent this with superheroes as well.

What it does

The app is meant to allocate guardians (heroes) to certain states based on the amount and types of crimes that happen in that state. The guardians will be allocated based on their specialties.

How we built it

We used Java, JavaFx, Maven, and GSON to make the app. The frontend is made with JavaFX. The backend used GSON to call APIs. The app is still currently a work in progress. We plan on finishing it at a later date.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into a big challenge of time management. We also ran into issues relating to compile scripts and certain tools. In the future, we will plan better and learn more about the tools we use.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team is really proud of the creative output that came about from this project. We made a whole story complete with fictional characters, organizations, and symbols. We are also very proud of getting the feeling of working together to cooperate on a project like this. This is one of our member's first hackathons so we are very glad we got to have this valuable experience.

What we learned

This project taught us a lot about how to work with one another in a team. We discovered that we love being together in a room riffing off of one another and working towards a common goal. We also learned about creating JavaFX applications, searching for and interacting with relevant APIs, and using source control to share our work.

What's next for GRIDS

We ended up being very inspired by the possibilities of this project and so we plan to continue working on it over the next few weeks to grow it into something that better fits our original vision. We are looking forward to adding a better visual interface, increasing the clarity of our presentation with a color-coded map, and finding new data sources to update our information in real-time.
