The Inspiration
Industrial machines rarely fail without warning. A motor may slowly start consuming more power, vibration may increase, or temperature may gradually rise before a serious fault occurs. The problem is that these small changes are often buried inside large amounts of machine telemetry.
We wanted to build something that doesn't just show numbers, but helps answer: "What changed, why does it matter, and which machine should we look at first?"
That idea led us to GridLite.
What We Built
GridLite is an AI-powered industrial machine intelligence platform that monitors machine telemetry such as:
- Voltage
- Current
- Power
- Power factor
- Temperature
- Vibration
- Machine state
Instead of relying only on fixed threshold alarms, GridLite establishes normal operating behavior and looks for meaningful deviations.
Our core intelligence focuses on three major capabilities:
- Anomaly Detection — identifies unusual machine behavior.
- Behavior Change Detection — identifies gradual changes from a machine's normal operating pattern.
- AI Q&A and Diagnosis — helps operators understand what happened and why a machine requires attention.
GridLite also connects these insights with energy analysis, machine health, priority scoring, and event monitoring.
For example, if a motor begins showing increased vibration together with rising power and temperature, GridLite can identify the abnormal behavior, assess its significance, and provide evidence that can help an operator investigate the machine.
How We Built It
The current prototype uses a software-first architecture so that the complete system can be demonstrated without requiring expensive hardware on every machine.
Our backend processes machine telemetry and stores the resulting information. The intelligence layer analyzes the time-series data and generates anomaly, behavior, energy, health, priority, and event information.
The frontend provides a professional dashboard where users can monitor machines, inspect telemetry, investigate events, view energy information, and interact with the AI assistant.
The architecture is designed so that simulated telemetry used in the prototype can later be replaced by data from IoT sensors, smart meters, or industrial gateways.
What We Learned
One of our biggest learnings was that industrial monitoring is not simply about detecting whether a value is "high" or "low."
A single unusual reading does not necessarily mean a machine is failing. The relationship between parameters, their trend over time, and deviation from the machine's normal behavior can be much more meaningful.
We also learned the importance of explainability. An alert such as "Anomaly Detected" is not enough for an operator. The system should provide evidence and context so that the user can understand why the alert was generated.
Challenges We Faced
Building the project as a software-first prototype presented several challenges.
The first was creating realistic machine behavior without access to a factory environment. We developed simulated telemetry representing normal operation and abnormal scenarios so that the complete intelligence pipeline could be tested.
Another challenge was connecting the different intelligence layers. Anomaly detection, behavior analysis, energy analysis, health assessment, events, and diagnosis need to remain consistent rather than producing disconnected results.
We also faced deployment challenges while moving the system from localhost to a cloud environment. We designed a deployment-friendly simulation mode so the prototype can demonstrate continuously changing machine behavior without requiring a developer to manually run the simulator.
What's Next
GridLite is currently a working prototype. Our next step is to validate the system using real industrial telemetry and connect it to IoT sensors or existing industrial monitoring infrastructure.
We envision GridLite as a lightweight intelligence layer that can sit on top of existing machine data rather than requiring organizations to replace their entire monitoring infrastructure.
GridLite's goal is simple: detect what changed, understand why it matters, and help people act before a small problem becomes a costly one.
