Inspiration
We drew a lot of inspiration from our personal university experience. While designing we considered how we could create a product that we would personally enjoy while also being functional.
What it does
Our product is a bed frame that also includes a bench, desk, couch, and storage that is embedded into the frame and is able to be pulled out. This bed frame helps reduce the amount a space needed while also ensuring that a student has everything they need to be comfortable.
How we built it
In order to build UNIversal lounge we began by building each individual part in Autodesk inventor. This includes the frame, mattress, couch, cushions, desk, handles, drawers, and bench. After each part was build we crated an assembly to fit all of the pieces together, the also did a motion constrained assembly to understand how the pieces will fit together
Challenges we ran into
While prototyping our design our team encountered a few challenges. The biggest challenge was assembling all the pieces together to ensure that they fit while also constraining them properly to only include the degrees of freedom desired. Another challenge faced was placing the hinge between the desk top and leg of the desk such that in can collapse in for storage but also be placed at a 90 degree angle when it is in use. The difficultly came in the placement such that the hinge would not have too much force on it and collapse in a real world situation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Overall our team is extremely proud of all our accomplishments in creating the entire product. We learned so much especially when it came to putting the assembly together and creating the motion constrains. We also learned how to create an animation to give us a visual representation of the final product. As well we modelled a room to visualize the layout and was able to significantly reduce the size of a room that would be needed.
What we learned
Our team learned a lot about the 3D printing process. Including how the slice profile can affect the quality of the print as well as the time required. We also learned how to create an animation of designs while allowed us create a visual representation of how the product would look.
What's next for Grenglins
This competition introduced our team to the world of 3D printing and design which is something that we have learned we all enjoy. In the future we hope to refine and advance our CADing skills and learn more about 3D printing and it use in real world situations. Ultimately we hope that our skills can eventually lead to us creating a real world product that can have a positive impact on our society.
