Inspiration
Meunsters Inc finds social media quite addictive and wanted to develop a healthy solution.
What it does
Gremlin turns unblocking into a small workout: when a friend sends you a challenge, selected apps stay locked until you complete a short exercise—pushups or jumping jacks—in front of your camera. The app counts reps in real time using on-device pose detection, so getting back to your apps is tied to a bit of movement and makes the “gate” to screen time a healthy one.
How we built it
We developed multiple solutions separately to test the viability of our idea. The three main parts we wanted to create were a system to communicate between phones, an exercise detector, and a screen time blocker. After much difficulty navigating the Apple Ecosystem and a proper amount of headbashing, we were able to combine these parts into one project and create a functioning (developer environment) App.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into many issues with iOS regarding Family Controls entitlement, devices of different specs, and Firebase.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A pretty cool MVP that has
- blocking with screen time
- firebase to process blocking requests
- a QR code reader and scanner
- a push-up and jumping-jack detector
What we learned
We learned how to use Swift, how to program with insane amounts of caffeine, and how to ship an app on no sleep and pure stubbornness.
