Inspiration

We took some inspiration from the video game REIGNS mainly in the form of the card swiping mechanic. We took this simple gameplay concept but wanted to put it into the context of a storefront game, which is where we got the inspiration for Greetings, I Heard You Have LuxuryGood.

What it does

It's a computer card game that doubles as a trading simulator. You, as the merchant, have to decide whether or not to sell to the different customers that visit your shop. You're able to gain (or lose!) reputation and money depending on your choices. You may be able to make more money from selling an item if you hold onto it and sell it to a different character, but denying a customer will decrease your reputation and could result in a game over. Therefore, you have to chose wisely whether or not you want to hold on to an item or go ahead and sell it.

How we built it

We programmed the game using Unity and Microsoft Visual Studio. For the sprites we used the program Aseprite and for our lovely title page and thumbnail we used Adobe Photoshop CC 2019.

Challenges we ran into

We had a tough time with obscure mistakes and incorrect cross-references throughout the scripts during the development process which caused a variety of problems such as infinite executions of the code and a couple of computer crashes. Another challenge we ran into was that during the planning process we found that we all had really ambitious ideas but we knew we had to limit the scope of them in order to actually finish by the deadline. Finally, we had a lot of trouble coming up with a name for this project. We went through a lot of ideas and multiple votes, but finally we settled on Greetings, I Heard You Have LuxuryGood because ultimately it was the one that everyone could agree on.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This was the first time that anyone on our team had ever made anything in a hackathon and we ended up learning so much more than we ever expected. We are also especially proud of the name, which took a surprisingly long amount of time to come up with.

What we learned

During the course of development, we learned the importance of planning the interconnection of systems beforehand, proper placement and organization of scripts in Unity, and integrating systems as they are being developed.

What's next for Greetings, I Heard You Have LuxuryGood

In the future, we would like to hopefully improve upon Greetings, I Heard You Have LuxuryGood. We wanted to add so much more to it, but we had to cut features in order to get it done on time. We would like to add a system for determining the rarity of an item and the price associated with the rarity, more sprites for both aliens and items, more of a story aspect, an extended timeline, and many other features.
