Inspiration
The prompt of developing something which encourages sustainable transportation really interested our group because many members of our group ride the bus to get around on grounds and wondered if this decision was actually significant at all. Turns out it is!
What it does
GreenWay is a web application that provides users the most environmentally friendly route and method of transportation to get from one place to another.
How we built it
We utilized Google Maps API, Django, HTML, CSS, JS. We also utilized data from research for carbon emissions to construct our algorithm.
Challenges we ran into
It was the teams first time utilizing Google Maps API so it took some time to get used to. It was also one member’s first ever Hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of the visualization of the carbon emissions for each trip because we think it is effective in portraying the environmental significance of every trip we make.
What we learned
Driving short distances with your car is very very very bad!
What's next for GreenWay
We would like to make the application more interactive, such as creating a cumulative “carbon emissions saved” counter for each account. We could also make algorithm for computing the carbon emission more accurate by accounting for other factors such as topography.
