Inspiration

A lot of our team members love to online shop, but we can never differentiate between companies that were sustainable or not. Additionally, it was really difficult to find clothes we liked from more sustainable and eco-friendly organizations.

What it does

Our Chrome extension empowers conscious shoppers to make eco-friendly fashion choices effortlessly. When browsing online, it provides a quick sustainability score for clothing brands, rating them on environmental impact, ethical practices, and animal welfare. Beyond that, if you find an item you like from a less sustainable brand, the extension can suggest similar styles from more eco-conscious alternatives. It’s a one-stop tool to help you shop with style and sustainability in mind, without compromising on your fashion choices!

How we built it

We built a chrome extension using HTML, CSS, and JS

Challenges we ran into

None of us had prior experience making chrome extensions before, so we faced a huge learning curve when it came to that. Additionally, since extensions are supposed to be lightweight, there are many restrictions we faced when we wanted to make a simple API call, or do other basic functions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a solution I can see myself using on a regular basis. We made a simple and clean UI that doesn't get in the way of your daily shopping. Also, we had some big breakthroughs around API calls, which was extremely rewarding.

What we learned

We gained invaluable experience working efficiently in a team, mastering task delegation, and honing our project management skills to bring this project to life. Alongside improving our teamwork, we deepened our understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with a particular focus on developing Chrome extensions. Additionally, we researched and learned about ethical and eco-friendly companies, gaining insight into their sustainable practices and missions, which shaped the core of our project.

What's next for GreenThreads

We currently maintain a medium-sized database that provides sustainability scores for large companies. In the future, we aim to collaborate with Good On You to integrate their database or API, expanding our score coverage to a wider range of brands. Additionally, we're excited about the potential of using GenAI to provide style recommendations for specific items, making eco-friendly fashion more accessible and fun.
