Inspiration

The inspiration for this project stemmed from the critical role that forests play in sustaining ecosystems and supporting various essential services. Recognizing the significance of automated forest categorization and segmentation in fostering sustainable development and informed urban planning, we embarked on a journey to contribute to this important field. Throughout the project, we delved into the intricate connections between forests and services such as biodiversity preservation, carbon storage, and water regulation. Learning about the multifaceted importance of forests deepened our commitment to creating a solution that could aid in their effective management.

What it does

Automatic categorization and segmentation of forest cover

How we built it

Building the project involved leveraging machine learning techniques, particularly in the realm of image segmentation. We made use of the Tensorflow framework and Flask to host the model.

Challenges we ran into

One of the significant challenges encountered was the quest for a robust and diverse dataset. The scarcity of readily available, high-quality datasets posed a hurdle that required thorough exploration and curation

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Overcoming this challenge was a testament to the project's resilience and determination to address real-world environmental concerns.

What we learned

A valuable lesson from this project is the crucial role that data accessibility and quality play in the success of machine learning endeavors. The challenge of finding a suitable dataset underscored the importance of meticulous dataset curation and the need for readily available, diverse, and well-annotated data

What's next for GreenSense

Continuously fine-tune the machine learning model to enhance its accuracy and robustness, explore advanced deep learning models, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or transformer models, to further improve segmentation accuracy and collaborate with experts and stakeholders to gather feedback and insights, ensuring the practical relevance of our tool.
