Inspiration

Modern CI/CD fleets run millions of compute-heavy container jobs every day regardless of whether the regional electrical grid is burning coal at peak demand or curtailing surplus wind and solar. We built GreenRunner to turn carbon-aware DevOps orchestration into both a deterministic optimization engine and an interactive grid-dispatch strategy game.

What it does

GreenRunner routes CI/CD build, test, and container stages across global runner regions (us-west-oregon, eu-north-sweden, ap-northeast-tokyo, us-east-virginia, and sa-east-sao-paulo) using live marginal carbon-intensity forecasts (gCO2eq/kWh), SLA deadline budgets, and egress latency constraints:

  • Carbon Scheduler Agent: Computes Pareto-optimal region + time-shift assignments that minimize total grams of CO2 without violating pipeline SLA windows.
  • YAML Refactor Agent: Generates drop-in .gitlab-ci.yml runner tag overrides, matrix caching rules, and deferred execution schedules.
  • Interactive Grid Dispatch Game: Lets players compete against the 4-agent scheduler across 5 real-world incident scenarios (Grid Emergency Spike, Monorepo Release Rush, Cross-Ocean Data Gravity, Nightly ML Training Wave, and Zero-Carbon Audit).

How we built it

  • Zero-Dependency Carbon & SLA Engine (engine.js): Browser/Node UMD engine implementing multi-objective Pareto scoring, 24-hour regional grid carbon curves, kWh energy estimation, and automated YAML patch generation.
  • Interactive Control Room UI (index.html, styles.css, app.js): Real-time regional carbon telemetry map, interactive SLA vs. carbon weight sliders, and side-by-side .gitlab-ci.yml diff inspector.
  • Verification Suite (tests/): 101 automated unit and DOM smoke tests with zero harness violations.
