Inspiration
Procurement is one of the largest contributors to corporate emissions, yet companies have almost no visibility into it at the moment decisions are made. Most procurement teams choose suppliers based only on cost and speed, while hidden “shadow emissions” from shipping, packaging, and sourcing remain completely invisible.
Existing tools only track emissions after they occur, which is too late to create meaningful impact. As a result, companies rely heavily on carbon credits as a reactive solution instead of reducing emissions at the source.
We were inspired to solve this gap by shifting sustainability from a reporting activity to a real-time decision-making process. We wanted to build a system that helps companies reduce emissions before they happen and guides them toward smarter long-term climate actions.
What it does
GreenProcure AI is an AI-powered platform that helps companies make sustainable procurement decisions in real time while also building a long-term climate strategy.
The platform analyzes supplier choices and procurement behavior, assigns a “Green Score,” detects inefficiencies such as rush shipping or fragmented orders, and recommends lower-emission alternatives instantly.
It also provides a structured climate strategy across three levels:
Reduce emissions through operational improvements Offset unavoidable emissions using carbon credits Own long-term sustainability initiatives like renewable energy or green infrastructure
Additionally, the platform includes a carbon credit marketplace that connects users with verified providers, filtered by sector, location, and quality.
How we built it
We designed GreenProcure AI as a multi-layered system combining real-time analysis with strategic planning.
The system takes inputs such as company industry, location, and procurement data (or a company website for automatic detection). Using AI, it analyzes supplier options, assigns Green Scores, and identifies inefficiencies in procurement behavior.
Based on this analysis, the platform generates a personalized sustainability strategy by balancing Reduce, Offset, and Own actions. It then provides actionable outputs, including better supplier recommendations, emission reduction strategies, budget allocation, and projected CO₂ savings.
The platform is designed to be simple, scalable, and applicable across industries, making it easy for companies to integrate sustainability into everyday decisions.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was translating complex sustainability concepts into simple, actionable insights that can be used in real time. Procurement decisions happen quickly, so the system needed to provide clear recommendations without overwhelming the user.
Another challenge was designing a system that balances short-term decision-making with long-term strategy. It required structuring the Reduce, Offset, and Own framework in a way that is both practical and impactful.
We also had to think carefully about how to represent environmental impact (such as the Green Score) in a way that is intuitive, meaningful, and easy to compare across suppliers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a system that brings sustainability into real-time decision-making instead of just tracking emissions after the fact.
We developed a Real-Time Decision Engine that scores suppliers and suggests lower-emission alternatives instantly, making “shadow emissions” visible and actionable.
We also created a clear Reduce–Offset–Own framework that combines immediate impact with long-term climate strategy in one platform.
Overall, we’re proud of building a solution that is practical, scalable, and focused on reducing emissions at the source.
What we learned
We learned that sustainability solutions are most effective when they are integrated directly into existing workflows rather than added as a separate step.
We also realized that companies need both immediate actions and long-term guidance. Providing only analytics or only strategy is not enough both must work together.
Additionally, simplifying complex environmental data into clear decision-making tools is critical for adoption and real-world impact.
What's next for GreenProcure AI
We plan to enhance the platform by improving data accuracy for supplier emissions, expanding integrations with procurement systems, and refining the AI models for better recommendations.
We also aim to build deeper partnerships with verified carbon credit providers and expand the marketplace for more transparent and accessible offset options.
In the long term, our goal is to make GreenProcure AI a standard tool for companies aiming to achieve net-zero targets by turning every procurement decision into a climate-conscious decision.
