Inspiration
Climate change hits vulnerable communities hardest, yet they're excluded from the green economy. We saw marginalized youth lacking both green skills training and pathways to climate jobs. GreenPath bridges this gap—turning climate action into economic opportunity while reducing inequality.
What it does
GreenPath is an AI-powered platform that:
- Provides free micro-learning modules on green skills (tree plantation, solar maintenance, water conservation)
- Uses AI to match users with paid climate micro-tasks in their communities
- Tracks real impact: jobs completed, income earned, trees planted, CO2 offset
- Integrates ASDI climate data to prioritize urgent environmental needs
How we built it
Tech Stack:
- Frontend: React.js + Tailwind CSS
- Backend: Node.js + Express + Supabase
- AI/ML: Python + GROQ API
AI Components:
- Smart Job Matching: Combines user skills, location, climate risk to recommend personalized jobs
- Climate Risk Scoring: ML model using ASDI datasets to prioritize high-urgency areas
- NLP Skill Extraction: Automatically matches user qualifications to job requirements
Data Sources:
- NOAA GHCN (climate risk assessment)
Challenges we ran into
- Dataset Integration: ASDI datasets have varying formats—we built flexible parsers and focused on well-documented sources
- AI Cold Start Problem: New users have no history—we use location and stated skills for initial recommendations
- Real-Time Performance: Optimizing ML pipeline to generate recommendations
- Time Constraints: Balancing ambitious AI features with hackathon timeline—prioritized core matching algorithm first
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a working AI recommendation engine that combines climate data with user profiles
- Created an intuitive platform addressing both SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action)
- Designed a scalable system that can generate real social and environmental impact
What we learned
- Climate datasets are rich but require careful preprocessing and domain knowledge
- AI for social good must balance technical sophistication with accessibility
- The best solutions tackle multiple problems simultaneously (climate + inequality + education)
What's next for GreenPath
Immediate:
- Pilot with 2-3 NGOs in climate-vulnerable regions
- Mobile app development (Android/iOS)
- Real payment integration (Stripe, mobile money)
Advanced Features:
- Computer vision for automatic task verification (photo analysis)
- Gamification with badges and leaderboards
Long-term Vision:
- Scale to 50+ countries, focusing on climate-affected regions
- Partner with governments and international organizations (UNDP, World Bank)
- Build the "LinkedIn of the Green Economy"—the global platform for climate jobs and skills
