Inspiration

Our inspiration for GreenMaps stemmed from a vision for sustainability and helping the environment. We hoped to create a tool that empowers users to make eco-friendly transportation choices effortlessly.

What it does

GreenMaps is a Chrome extension that calculates a Sustainability Score for different routes on Google Maps, helping users choose environmentally friendly routes. It takes into account distance, mode of transportation, time, and emissions data to provide users with a clear, low-impact navigation option. The "View Past Statistics" tab helps organize this data and more into readable visualizations. Our shop green function recommends sustainably practicing businesses in the area you are visiting, allowing you to travel green, spend green and live green.

How we built it

React.js front end to dynamically load API data into readable graphs and charts
Chart.js to display graphs and charts
AirVisual API to access pollution data, and atmospheric concentrations
Metaphor API to scrape the web for nearby eco-friendly businesses
Twilio API to send business recommendations to users

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges we faced was collecting accurate data to calculate the Sustainability Scores. Additionally, integrating our extension with Google Maps presented technical difficulties that required innovative brainstorming. Many of us were using technologies and frameworks for the first time so it required a lot of learning and thinking on our feet.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to develop an extension that aids users to make more sustainable transportation choices. Seeing our concept come to life and positively impact users' lives makes this project worthwhile to accomplish.

What we learned

Through the development of GreenMaps, we gained a better understanding of JavaScript, web development, and creating an extension as well as the importance of data accuracy in sustainability applications. We also learned the value of teamwork and collaboration in turning an idea into a reality.

What's next for GreenMaps

Our vision for GreenMaps includes expanding its reach to more platforms, including other map softwares and mobile devices. We also plan to upgrade the user experience with real-time data and personalized recommendations. Ultimately, we want to create a greener, more sustainable future by helping people make less carbon-costly decisions.
