The Problem
Transit apps nowadays seem to have it all: direct routes, affordable options, and a wide variety of ways to get around. However, they fail to display one crucial factor: environmental impact. With transportation accounting for 38% of energy-related CO2 emissions in the United States (2021), it is crucial that we take into consideration the carbon footprint of our travels. Our solution directly addresses this problem by bringing sustainability to the forefront of the transit experience. It’s important that users are aware of the impact of their travel choices and our app helps to raise awareness. By highlighting other factors like cost and time, our app is also able to address the need for making economical and time-wise decisions.
Addressing the High Carbon Footprint of Travel
Offering the option of both local and long-distance travel, our app is designed to help everyone get around – from the daily commuter to those looking for a week-long getaway. GreenMaps displays the best routes, sorting them by those with the lowest carbon footprint, the speediest, and those with the lowest price. A “Best Overall” category is also provided, which weighs all of the above factors to determine the most convenient route.
No particular destination in mind? GreenMaps has you covered. It offers the option to choose what sort of experience you might be looking for, helping you find the perfect trip for your interests by creating a recommended list of destinations. After selecting a trip, GreenMaps encourages users to be environmentally conscious and make more sustainable choices through design features that include a progress bar which quantifies how green the user’s choices in transit are over time.
